APPRENTICE PROGRAM
“We abuse land because we see it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect.”
--Aldo Leopold
One of Saguaro Juniper's main educational opportunities is the Saguaro Juniper Land Steward Apprenticeship. This year-long apprenticeship is an opportunity to spend time on the land and participate in all aspects of our community ranch. The apprentice will learn ranching skills, but this is less about becoming a rancher and more about becoming a human being in tune with our interconnections to all beings. This is an opportunity to experience first hand our belonging within the ecosystem in which we live.
This land has been a place of healing for many people, a place where people have learned self-reliance, how to think creatively with limited resources, how to ask for help, how to trust. How each person responds to being here is unique and can’t be predicted ahead of time.
The physical work of the ranch is a way to participate in the life of the land and the animals. Apprentices learn about care and movement of cattle, pasture maintenance, range monitoring, wildlife awareness, irrigation operation, mechanical repairs, tracking, horsemanship, how to work in a group, and other skills as needed.
Overall, we strive to create a “culture-of-learning” in which what we learn each day is as important as the completion of tasks.
Apprenticeships last for 11 months and start in January or February of each year. Contact info@saguarojuniper.com if you are interested in being considered for next year's apprenticeship.
We welcome your financial support to continue to make this apprenticeship opportunity available. You can go to the Donate page to see ways you can support us financially, both big and small.
A FILM ABOUT SAGUARO JUNIPER AND CASCABEL
by Luce Fayolle
Luce Fayolle, a young French film maker, volunteered at Saguaro Juniper during the summer of 2022. When she returned to France, she made this film about her experiences.

"In summer, the heat can be oppressive but the key is to find a balance between work and resting time... These times allow us to slow down, to listen to the world around us, to live in these beautiful landscapes. If you are not afraid of outdoor work, love nature, animals, and want to learn about the mutual respect between the sensitive world and humans, you will love volunteering with Saguaro Juniper!"
